It is the mission of the First Nations Women’s Alliance to strengthen our Tribal communities by creating a forum for leaders to come together to address the
domestic violence and sexual assault. We are committed to ending all forms of violence
by providing culturally relevant services and resources and facilitating the provision
of those services by others in our communities.
First Nations Women’s Alliance was created from the “Native American Domestic Violence
Forum.” The Forum began in 1996 as a committee of the North Dakota Council
on Abused Women’s Services (NDCAWS) in order to more effectively
respond to the needs and concerns of North Dakota domestic violence/sexual assault
programs serving Native American communities. In 2007, First Nations Women’s
Alliance (FNWA) obtained federal funding for the formation of a tribal
coalition, and subsequently obtained a 501 (c) 3 status. The board of directors ismade
up of the program directors of each of the reservation based programs and one
at large member.
